Above the law
Meaning: To be in a position where the law or rules don't apply to you and you can avoid punishment for breaking those laws or rules.
法律やルールが適用されず、それらを守らないことによって罰を受けることも避けられるという立場にいること。
How to use: Vigilantes, while well-intentioned, take the law into their own hands. They act as though they are above the law.
自警団員たちは善意からとはいえ自分たちで勝手に法律を解釈する。まるで自分たちには法は当てはまらないかのようにふるまう。
be 動詞＋above the law で、法を超越する、つまり法を免れる、法の適用を受けないという意味になります。今、世間をにぎわせている元CEOの脱出劇を思い出してしまいます。
