ライアン先生の感想と子供英会話のレッスン内容について

カナさん（中学2年生 女子）のレッスン内容:

• 英語の日記添削し、正しい文法や表現を教えながら、スピーキングの練習材料にする。
• 英語のストーリーを使い、わからない部分をクリアにする。
• 興味のあるトピックを決めて、会話をする。生徒の質問にはしっかりと答え、また先生側からも同じ質問を生徒に返すことによって、会話のキャッチボールが生まれる。

「カナさんは今、中学2年生ですが、幼いころ短い間でしたが海外に住んでいたと聞いており、そのためレッスンを始めた時点で英語とは何かをしっかり把握していたようです。
最初のころは、毎日の生活や、休日や週末は何をしていたかなどについての日記を英語で書かせ、添削したり、それから会話の練習をしました。レッスンの最後に、ディズニーストーリーを題材にして、わからないところや、説明が欲しいところに最低3か所アンダーラインを引かせました。
しばらくしてからカナさんはイギリスに学校主催の語学研修に行きました。戻ってきてから、もっと会話の時間を持ちたいというようになりました。
ただし、日記を書かせることは続けています。それを添削し、またカナさん自身の言葉で間違えている部分を何も見ないで説明させることで、日記に書いてあるストーリーをスピーキングの練習にも使えるようにしているのです。
それから、"What is an American?" （アメリカ人とは何か？）"What makes a good friend?"（どうやったら良い友達ができるか？）といったトピックについて話し合います。
私は、カナさんが聞きたがるどんな質問に対しても時間をかけるようにしています。
それが、英語に関すること、私に関すること、人生についてなど、何でもです。
そして私もその質問に関連する質問を彼女に投げかけ、答えてもらいます。
こてにより新しい会話がもたらされ、レッスンが終わるまで、これをテーマに話し合います。

洋晃くん（高校1年 男子）のレッスン内容：

• 生徒が好きなジャンルの物語を英語で書かせ（SFなど）、興味をもたせる工夫をする。
• 学校や塾で使う教科書も持ってこさせて、わからないところを指導し、学業での成績アップにも気を配る。
• 英語のストーリーブックで音読をさせ、正しい発音、イントネーションを多く練習させる。

洋晃くんは高校1年で、とても勉強好きなようで、科学と数学が得意だそうです。
英語の勉強もとてもがんばっていて、英語の塾にも行っているようです。
既にかなり勉強量が多いので、彼に日常生活についての日記を書かせることはしていません。
かわりに、かれにSFストーリーを書かせています。そのため私はまず彼にフィクションを書く基礎を教えました。 そして物語が場面から場面へ移る流れについてアドバイスしました。
物語を書く上で、私は人物描写や動作の表現のさまざまな方法についてや、読者をひきつけるための五感の表現をどうやって使うか等について教えました。
フィクションを書くことで、彼は想像力を使い、単にテキストを読んで、問題に答えるだけというよりも、英語をさらに興味深いやり方で学んでいます。
また、私は彼に、塾や高校で勉強している教材を持ってこさせ、わからない部分を質問させています。
ディズニーのストーリーブックも使っており、彼が聞けるように、私の朗読の声を録音してあげています。

Kana :

Kana is a second year junior high school student. From what I remember she lived for a short time in a foreign country when she was younger, so she already had a firm grasp on English when we started our lessons. In the beginning, I would have her write journals about her daily life and what she did for holidays/weekends. Then we would have a short conversation, and at the end we would discuss the Disney Storybook story she read for the week, and she would underline at least 3 sentences that she didn't understand or that she wanted me to explain further. Then she went on a study abroad trip to England with her school, and when she came back she said she didn't want to read the Disney stories anymore and wanted to focus more on conversation. Since then I have still been having her write journals, and I correct them and have her tell me in her own words, without looking, the story she wrote in her journal for speaking practice. Then we have a short discussion on topics such as "What is an American?" or "What makes a good friend?" I also take time out for question time where she asks me any kind of question she wants, whether it be questions about English, questions about me, questions on life in general, etc. I answer her questions, and then I ask her a question related to that and she answers, and that usually brings around a new discussion, and we talk about that until time expires.

Hiroaki :

Hiroaki is a first year high school student. He seems to be very studious and is good at science and math. He also studies English really hard and goes to cram school as well. Since he does a lot of studying, I haven't been having him write journals about his daily life. Instead I have been having him write a science fiction story. I have some background in fiction writing, so I taught him the basics to writing fiction, and I help him guide his story from scene to scene. During the teaching of writing stories I tell him about different ways of describing people, different ways to express action, how to use the 5 senses to engage his readers, etc. By writing fiction he can use his imagination and study English in a more interesting way than by just reading texts and answering questions. I have also asked him to bring me things he is studying in cram school and his regular school to ask me questions about. We also read the Disney stories, and I record my voice reading the story on his voice recorder for him to listen to.
